Garden Notes~June 19 2014

Joining in with Amanda over at Soulemama today to share what is going on in my garden (container garden).

I had heard that one squash plant is enough to provide more squash than you can use and it seems that my zucchini plants are starting to take over the container garden on the front deck. I do enjoy those pretty squash blossoms. I also have tomatoes, corn, strawberries, kale, watermelon, carrots, and all sorts of culinary herbs growing. Did I mention that this is my first serious garden that I am growing? I have dabbled in a few plants before, but they ended up dying due to neglect or in the case of last year a tree falling on them. Everything seems to be doing really well, I am still not sure about the corn in the container and I may have too many seeds in one container, but this first serious garden of mine is more of a learning experience and if nothing else, I am sure I will at least get some herbs out of it. One more garden component is the tick we found on the side of the house...yuck. It is that time of year, time to get the tick repellent on my skin. I have a spray that I bought at my local healthy co-op, but if anyone has an even more natural repellent, please let me know. What is growing in everyone else's garden?

Lovin' in the Summertime

We have been having amazing weather here. There is the threat of rain on an almost daily basis, but it just stays beautiful every single day. It is so hot, but all I want to do is stay outside...all I need is someone to clean my house, please. By the way, loving this time of year. My days off are actually spent enjoying time with the kids since they are now out of school, yay. Sometimes I think how great it would be to home school them, so I can have more time with them. I do know that the kids both enjoy the social aspect of school though, at least for now. Ok off on a tangent again, sorry. I also love the fireflies, sunny hot days, cocktails, hikes, iced tea & ice cream.
Found this beautiful moth while on a walk with the pup the other morning. Unfortunately it was already dead, but on the upside I was able to get some great pictures.

Made some kale chips and vegan herb potato salad.

My current summer cocktail...gin, organic Volcano limeade, and champagne....yummm.

One of the best things about summer is spending time out on the porch with the hubby and the pup...yep life is pretty great right now.

Monday FunDay

Another great Monday off with the hubby...I could get used to this. The only thing that I hoped for was to get into the woods and so that is exactly what we did. Now that the parkway is fixed just north of here, we were able to visit Craggy Gardens. Just me, the hubby, and the pup. The top of the mountain was so peaceful and great for the soul. I have decided that I need to spend my days off hiking for the rest of the summer and after discussing that plan with the kids, I believe they are all in. Yes, yes, it is going to be a fabulous summer.

See, beautiful. We picknicked on the bench under those awesome trees. A great day indeed.

Para para paradise

Had another fabulous day off. I started the day off with a huge list of things to do as usual. I did make some head way on the list, but not as much time was spent in the kitchen or inside the house cleaning as wanted/needed. More time was spent outside again and luckily I was able to spend that time outside with the rest of the family planting more seeds and just enjoying the beautiful sun. We checked out a whole bunch of insects around the house as well. My little man is fascinated with all living things and truly seems to have a way with them. Today there was a moth (I think) outside on the railing of the deck and it would fly away and come back to the same spot over and over. Eventually the moth starting flying onto my son's hand and then onto his head and he would walk around with this moth on him. He was totally enamored with this moth and when we had to go inside to clean up, he kept asking about the moth and if he was ok. I really think he would thrive as a veterinarian one day...I can dream right.

The pup enjoying the outdoors too.

We have these daddy longlegs all over the place right now, blech.

Fireflies.

Basil, Cilantro, Oregano, Sage planted.

Summer cocktail time, inspired by Amanda over at Soulemama. This one is iced tea, agave, and pear vodka. It was ok, but I could definitely use some recipes if anyone has them??

I also made a yummy vegetable coconut curry casserole topped with biscuits. It has been a long time since we all were home to have dinner together and really way overdue. Another great day off, my only complaint is that there really aren't enough hours in the day. Can't wait for my next day off.
Peace,
Yasmin

Just the way I like it

I had a lovely day off on Monday and my husband had the day off too, woohoo. We decided to go out for breakfast and my only real wish was to spend most of the day outside, which is exactly what I did. My container garden is doing pretty well and I got some more direct sow seeds in. I really hope that they do really well. I am also off on Friday, so in between errands I hope to get some more outside time...maybe even fixing up two flower garden beds and weeding some different areas around this house that we rent. I think my Florida pup will enjoy the outside time as well...so here are some pictures of the "garden", the Fl pup, Gaps diet Banana Nut Muffins, and the hubby's part in beautifying the garden.

Peace,
Yasmin
